On August 20, 2018, Greta Thunberg decided to stop attending school until the Swedish general election in September. Then in ninth grade, Thunberg was motivated to act by Sweden’s unprecedented heat waves and wildfires that summer. She later extended her ‘school strike for the climate’, committing to strike every Friday until Sweden met the Paris Agreement goals. Her brave and creative approach to dealing with climate crisis motivated students around the world to follow suit in what became the Fridays for Future movement. Thunberg has gone on to speak at climate summits, national parliaments and the UN — and, of course, at countless climate protests. In her speeches, she talks about the need for a fundamental paradigm shift — a radical, systemic change — in response to the climate crisis.

In today’s world, everyone knows about the climate crisis, but few people take concrete action to tackle it. External events may have triggered Thunberg to act, but her creative approach and persistence are driven by an intrinsic motivation that hasn’t abated even in the face of opposition from some of the world’s most powerful people and institutions.
