For one day, focus on listening in all your interactions. On this day, before you meet other people, bring yourself back into your body from your thoughts by focusing on your breathing or your whole body for a minute or two.
Try not get lost in thought again during the social interaction. When others are speaking, concentrate on really listening and understanding what they are saying, and resist the urge to already think about what you want to say next. Try to relate to them on a deeper level: what might they be feeling, for example?
When it’s your time to talk, try to refer to and build on someone else’s thoughts in a complementary (instead of judging or critiquing) manner: ‘Yes, and…’
