Question 1 of 1
1. Question
Hedar Al-Terke, the creator of a medical start-up called Smart Bubbles, was a researcher at Aalto, when his supervisor, Janne Halme, encouraged him to get creative with his research. Al-Terke started thinking about a new research direction. He said,
‘Healthcare has always been a subject at the top of my mind. I began exploring functional interfaces for medical applications.’
He began to experiment with cancer diagnosis, working with injectable microbubbles. He asked whether it was possible for microbubbles to last longer, and eventually he found a way to do make that happen. This innovation makes it possible to diagnose cancer earlier, as well as more quickly and cheaply.
‘I arrived at this innovation due to my willingness to ask so-called stupid questions. Through ongoing collaboration with my team, asking those probing questions revealed wider-reaching applications of this technology.’
